In an interview with a German newspaper (that I roughly translated with BabelFish), 28-year-old d-man Dennis Seidenberg, an unrestricted free agent who was 5-25-30 with Carolina last year, says "concrete are the discussions at present with the Florida Panthers and the New York Ranger. My agent spoke with both clubs about the running time of the contract. I would have gladly a three-year contract."
But Seidenberg, who earned $1.2 mil last season, seems to indicate that teams are reluctant to give him a three-year deal because of worries about the a lower salary cap in the future. "This seems to deter the clubs....My agent says to me again and again, I am not to make myself concerns, we find an association. With Florida and the Ranger... nearly daily telephone calls."
Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Marc Staal, Dan Girardi have contracts and Matt Gilroy, Bobby Sanguinetti, Ilkka Heikkinen, Corey Potter and Mike Sauer already are expected to compete for roster spots in Rangers camp. Hmmm....
Sounds as if the Rangers might be discussing a one-year deal, the same as was kicked around with former Canadien Francis Bouillon.
Makes sense that Florida could offer two; Panthers have just five experienced D signed and have, by my count, about $7 million in cap space. Either Seidenberg or Bouillon is a decent pick-up if for one year. Insurance for a compressed season/schedule with the Olympics and gives the rookies a chance to assimilate with less pressure.
I won't be overjoyed or depressed either way - but I can see the thought process that's taking place.
